are you ready? we sure are!!! i have thoroughly enjoyed taking summer photos for this class, and i know those of you taking it will feel the same way once you start with our lessons!

I’m a HUGE HUGE fan of ali Edwards…..i’ve been following her since 2003 when she was on twopeasinabucket.com and when she first started her blog. Her summer manifesto inspired me to do the same. There are so many wonderful summer resources on blogs and pinterest for your own “bucket list” or summer wish list. Here is the one we came up with as a family…I wrote it on a chalkboard I got at a flea market for $10 and put on our weekend/summer house’s back porch.

The summer of no-stress|Finding the SUMMER joy 2012

This is a no stress approach to photographing summer. Perhaps I’ve mellowed a bit with having a second child, perhaps I’m maturing, perhaps I’m just learning to smell the roses…..i don’t know WHY I’m living more in the moment than in the perfect f-stop or ISO. What I DO know is that some of our photos will be “not technically perfect”….that perhaps we’ll break some of the “photography rules” that would cause photos to get slammed on a forum. BUT, we will capture the moment as it happens. Without stressing out. Without freaking out that we ::gasp:: cut a limb off or that we ::double gasp:: have dappled lighting on our child’s arm in the photo. And our photos are going to be AWESOME because we captured the moment as we lived in it. I have had a blast collecting the photos for all of these lessons….and I’ve really been able to just sit back and watch my children have fun while i capture the fun. I’ve watched the most awesome summer events unfold between my children…and I didn’t have to stage or pose…I just let the summer moments unfold.

What I hope we can all do as a group is just relax…isn’t that what summer is all about? I will guide you through some photo techniques to improve your photos, but you don’t have spend hours researching the technical terms to understand.

Our goal is just to capture our summer. That is it. We’re not trying to win the Pulitzer Prize for photography. Our children will look back on these photos in years to come and deem them prize worthy just as they are.

first communion portraits

i tackled a project i have always wanted to do this past month…i did a handful of first communion portraits for my son and other children at our church. i have been wanting to do this for some time now, and i’m so very glad to add this to my list of photographed events!

mini-session heaven

i LOVE mini-sessions….i actually like to just sit and brain storm mini-session ideas sometimes (yes, total dork here)…i think i just love photos of my own children SO much i try to scheme on how i can take more!

here are some proto-type photos i took for my new product ebook: the art of the mini-session. this $20 ebook will teach you how you can earn one month’s salary in just one day using your camera.

the dress was made by the fantastic vickie libbey of libbey’s little legacies. the vintage styling of the dress really added to the whole “look” i was going for in these photos!!!

and i processed these images using the new itty bitty action preset collection. wonderful preset collection…i’m a huge fan!!!!

oh the cuteness…

i finally had the motivation to take some photos using my “real” camera rather than just my iphone….it has been TOO long. and yes, i think my camera DID have a layer of dust on it (kinda kidding…..but that wouldn’t be inconceivable!).

just some quick photos (took about 10 minutes start to finish) to document flossie’s new “hairdo” – pigtails! i really think they suit her…not sure what has taken me so long to try these.

used my nikon d3, 35mm 2.0 lens (because with this wild one…i really have to be at an arm’s length from her….she is insanely busy…almost to the point of being dangerous…so i sacrificed a bit of lens distortion for safety on these!).

here is the lens i use (especially when working with toddlers like this one).

i put her up on a bar stool by the great light we get in the afternoon in our kitchen from the french doors. and i worked crazy fast….because she is a hater of the camera. so i was bribing her with m&m’s and working fast to get at least a couple of shots. i’m sure many of you wonder why i haven’t been posting as much…well…you have your answer below. she keeps me busier than i have EVER been in my life. i literally cannot take my eyes off of her for a second. she’s crafty and full of fire!

it really felt good to be photographing a toddler again – it has been too long! i was able to capture a wide variety of expressions by playing “where’s flossie?? pretending to not see her….and by hiding my face behind the camera then popping out saying “boo!”…works everytime!

i got her little dress from target….debated on purchasing it…and now i’m super glad i got it. she looked adorable in it! it is from their harajuku line by gwen stephani (most of the pieces in this collection were a little too trendy for my tastes, but this one was super cute and vintage looking).
